Online business of ‘Halala’ in UK

In the name of halala, several online businesses are charging divorced Muslim women thousands of pounds, according to a BBC investigation.

These women are paying this amount to marry a stranger and, after having sex, divorce him and remarry their first husband.

Farah (pseudonym) was married off by family friends when she was 20 years old. The two went on to have children, but Farah says the abuse began after that.

Farah told the BBC’s Asian Network and Victoria Derbyshire programme: ‘The first time my husband abused me was for money.’

Farah said, ‘They were trying to drag me out of the house by my hair. He would behave like a madman on several occasions.

Despite these abuses, Farah hoped that things would change, but her husband’s behavior became harsh, and then one day, her husband divorced her through a text message.

Farah explains, ‘I was at home with my children, and they were at work. After a heated argument, he sent me a text message: Divorce, divorce, divorce.’

There are some Muslim communities that use the triple talaq system to dissolve marriages.

Triple talaq is banned in most Muslim countries, but in Britain it is almost impossible to know how many women have experienced triple talaq.

Farah said, ‘I had my phone with me. I sent this message to my father. He said that your marriage is over now. You can’t live with him anymore.’

Farah says she was terrified but wanted to get back to her ex-husband.

Farrah says he was the ‘love of her life.’

Farah said that her ex-husband also regretted the divorce, and to get her ex-husband back, Farah resorted to the controversial system of Halala.

A section of Muslims believes that Halala is the only method by which two divorced persons can remarry if they wish to remarry.

In some halal cases, they may be economically exploited, blackmailed, and even subjected to sexual violence.

A large section of Muslims are strongly against this practice. He says that the laws related to divorce in Islam are being misinterpreted personally.

However, a BBC investigation has shown that several online services are engaging in Halala and that women are frequently being charged thousands of pounds for short-term marriages.

A man advertised a halal service on Facebook. She was met by an undercover BBC reporter as a divorced Muslim woman.

The man said that he could marry her for two and a half thousand pounds and then divorce her after intercourse so that she could remarry her first husband.

He said that many other people are working with him. He said that one of them had refused to divorce a woman after marrying her.

When the BBC met the man, he denied all the allegations against him and said that he was not involved in any Halala marriage and the page he created was just to know the pulse of the society.

Anxious to meet her first husband, Farah begins looking for someone who will marry her and then divorce her so she can remarry her ex-husband.

Farah said, ‘I’ve known girls who went for it in secret from the family and were used for months.

She was taken to a special room in a mosque for this purpose, where she slept with the imam or another person who performed this service (halala), after which she was free to sleep with other people.

But the Islamic Sharia Council in East London, which advises women on divorce, is staunchly opposed to halala.

The organization’s Khula Hasan declared, “This is a phony marriage.” It is a means of making money and exploiting forced women.

He added, ‘It is completely forbidden. A harsher word cannot be used for this. There are other ways, counseling. We will not allow anyone to do this. Whatever it is, you don’t need Halal’a.
